The silent scream is one of the most universally recognised dream nightmares — the mouth stretched wide, the full force of the body behind it, but absolute silence. This is the perfect image of complete emotional suppression: the intensity is present and enormous, but the mechanism for expressing it has been so thoroughly disabled that even in sleep it cannot come out.
